About this calculator
Dutching means backing more than one selection in the same market, splitting your stake so that the payout is identical no matter which of them comes in. The stake on each selection is proportional to its implied probability: total stake × (1 ÷ that selection's decimal odds) ÷ the sum of 1 ÷ odds across every selection.
The return is simply the total stake divided by that same sum. If the combined implied probability of your selections comes to less than 100%, the return beats your outlay and the profit is guaranteed — provided one of them wins. If it comes to more than 100%, which is usual once the bookmaker's margin is included, every outcome loses money and the calculator says so.
The combined implied probability figure is the key number to watch: it is the sum of 1 ÷ odds across your selections, expressed as a percentage. Below 100% is an arbitrage; above it, you are paying the bookmaker's overround.
Assumptions: exactly one selection can win, all bets are with the same bookmaker at the prices entered, and no commission is deducted. If you are dutching across an exchange, subtract commission from the returns yourself, and note that a dead heat will reduce the payout on the affected selection.
Frequently asked questions
Is dutching guaranteed to make a profit?
Only when the combined implied probability of your selections is under 100%, which is uncommon at a single bookmaker because of their built-in margin. Otherwise dutching just spreads risk across several outcomes at a small expected cost.
How is the stake split across selections decided?
In proportion to each selection's implied probability. Shorter-priced selections get a larger share of the stake, which is exactly what makes every possible return come out the same.
What happens if I round the stakes?
The returns stop being perfectly equal. Rounding to the nearest pound is usually fine for small stakes, but the more you round, the more the payouts drift apart between outcomes.
