About this calculator
In MPG mode, fuel needed is Distance ÷ MPG, multiplied by the price per gallon for total cost. In L/100km mode, fuel needed is (Distance ÷ 100) × the L/100km figure, multiplied by price per litre.
The two efficiency measures work in opposite directions — a higher MPG means better efficiency, but a lower L/100km does.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by your miles per gallon to get the gallons needed, then multiply by the price per gallon. In metric, multiply distance by the L/100km figure, divide by 100, and multiply by the price per litre.
Is a higher or lower number better for fuel efficiency?
It depends which measure you use. Higher MPG is better because you travel further per gallon, but lower L/100km is better because you burn less fuel over the same distance.
