About this calculator

Percentage questions come in three common forms, each handled by its own tab.

“X% of Y” multiplies Y by X÷100. “X is what % of Y” divides X by Y and multiplies by 100. “% change” calculates (New − Old) ÷ Old × 100, and shows whether it's an increase or a decrease.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example 30 out of 120 is 30 divided by 120, times 100 — which is 25%.

Why is a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall not back where it started?

Because each percentage applies to a different base. 100 rising 50% is 150, and 50% of 150 is 75 — so you end at 75, not 100. Percentage falls are always taken from the larger, already-increased figure.
